A fool for fabric weaves

As fabric lovers we’re talking about weaves and what's trending now. As time passes fabrics progress and change. Or are they just reemerging with a modern twist?  Fabrics that were in and then out are back trending again.

Weaving goes way back in time and is one of the most popular methods of textile production.  Weaving quite literally is the interlacing of two or more yarns to construct and form a two dimensional woven fabric.  Using different yarns, fibres and weaving constructions affect the characteristics of a woven fabric.  The fabric we are excited to see make a comeback as are a lot of designers and stylists is bouclé.

Bouclé is a soft, cosy springy to touch and comfortable textured fabric that can be done with a multitude of different weaves such as plain, twill and basket weave.  Bouclé is a French word quite literally meaning ‘buckled’ or ‘curled’ which is a term used for the knitted or woven fabrics made from it and a type of yarn produced.

The yarn is one strand of twisted core with a rough curled and knotted loose irregular strand to create a textured fabric that appears as a bubbled knotted effect.  The yarns that are twisted tight, stabilize for strength and durability and the remaining yarns are loosely laid to create the looped, irregular texture. Made from multiple components, bouclé can offer a multicolored, heathered look achieved through introducing a variety of colors during the production process.

Traditionally made with twisted wool, Bouclé fabrics can also be manufactured from other materials such as cotton, linen, silk or polyester, making its appeal so versatile adding softness and texture for applications of chairs, lounges, accent pillows, rugs and window dressings.  With this diversity it's no wonder this fabric has made a comeback in recent times.

In the 1940’s architect Florence Knoll and designer Eero Saarinen were very much advocates for the fabric, making this a very desirable weave of fabric with the enviable popularity of the Saarinen’s Womb Chair upholstered in bouclé making this a must have weave of fabric across an array of mid century furniture designs.

Fashion icon Coco Chanel also made bouclé a desirable timeless classic fabric with suits and dresses appearing on the catwalk in the 1950’s and reappearing throughout the times in the 80’s and 90’s with great colour weave combinations and timeless style.

These timeless designs of furniture and fashion have resurged, along with the nostalgic bouclé, the colour schemes may be a bit more contemporary and subdued but the curved lines are there.

All in all the fabric is constructed and manufactured with the same methods and weaves, the fibres may be different but the look and feel is still there creating a warm, luxurious and sophisticated look that is very now.
